What type of fencing do alpacas need?
Alpacas do not challenge fencing like other animals such as goats, so
fencing is really aimed at keeping predators out. We use 2"x4" no
climb fencing that is 4 feet high. We also use predator proof wired
filled gates on any outside gates. Gates that are inside between alpaca
fields are not wire filled.
In the pictures on this page, you will see some boys will challenge
fencing to get to open (non-bred) females. So it is best to not have
boys next to the girls on the same fence line. We also ran a yellow rope
around the outside perimeter. This is to keep white tail deer from
jumping into the pastures. It is a visual deterrent to them and even
though we live on a property that has 100s of deer, they do not come
into the alpaca pasture area.
Advice is to put as many gates in as you can afford and make sure they
are big enough to get a tractor, gator, trailer through easily.
We make sure that all the alpacas/llamas eat grain inside the barn and
runs for two reasons:
1 - if you need to catch animals for shots etc, they are used to eating
inside and you can simply close the gate, gather them and do what you
need to do.
2 - animals will NEVER miss grain, so if an animal does not come in to
eat - we suspect that he/she is not feeling well. This way we get to see
each animal each feeding time (twice a day) to make sure all are eating
etc. We also check them over while they are eating and walk among
them to make sure there are no cuts etc on them.
Crias can present a challenge when they get a little independent from
mom and are not yet eating grain. They don't always want to come in
and you may have to scoot them in the run in order to check them over.
Weighing crias is essential to make sure that they are gaining weight
and are healthy and vibrant.
