Should I get a guard llama or a dog?
If you have predators in your area, you might want to consider getting a
guardian for your alpacas. Of course the crias are the most venerable
to predators, but large packs of domestic dogs can also do harm to your
adults!
There are many coyote packs that roam the areas around our farm, so
we were very concerned about the potential issues this could cause to
our herd. We took several precautions:
- Our fields are set up by putting the mothers and babies in a
field that was surround on 3 sides by adults and one side by the
barn.
- All of the outer perimeter gates are wired
- We got llamas!!
It is your preference if you want to get llamas or dogs but llamas are
(in my opinion) much better
- They eat the same food as the alpacas
- They get the same meds as the alpacas
- The same vet can treat and the same care makes it easier
- They are in the same family - so there is no strange interactions
I do suggest girl llamas in with the girls and boy llamas in with the boys,
but Outback featured on this page is a gelded male and he has the honor
on our farm of being with the moms and babies. Of course he is special!!
Not all llamas guard! So it is important that you get your llama from
someone who can train them to be a guard animal. It is a certain
personality type and this is evident from a very young age. We have
llamas in all our pens, and even though the adult males probably don't
need it - I like having the llamas around. They have great personalities.
I often liken them to dogs and alpacas to cats. Llamas like attention
and will "hang out" with you more than an alpaca. I think the reason is
because they are so much larger than the alpaca that they are less
intimidated by us, but it could also be selective breeding since they
were and still are pack animals and are more in tune with their human
handlers.
We raise guard llamas to sell to alpaca, sheep and goat breeders and
look for health, vigor and personality only. We do not show llamas or
breed for fiber. If you want to breed llamas for show and breeding
stock - there are many great llama farms out there!! If you want an
exceptional guard for your herd - give us a call !!
